#20: Castle Crashers

Many of you will be saying things like:
  • What's Castle Crashers
  • Really, this game?
  • Above [insert game here]?
Well, I've always had a soft spot for this game.  It's the best brawler that I've ever played.  It's funny, action-packed, and the RPG elements are perfectly integrated into the game.

It's made by a very small indie development team named Behemoth.  They make sure that their games come out polished.  Castle Crashers surely did.  You play as one of four elemental knights that slowly gain experience and unlock more and more attacks, weapons, helpers, and spells.  How do you gain experience?  Beating the living daylights out of enemies.  The combat is quick and easy to pick up which makes the game simple to teach to new people.

The RPG elements add a massive degree of depth and customization to the game.  Would you like to specialize in magic, ranged, or melee?  What sort of over-the-top weapon would like to bash skulls with?  What odd floating animal head would like to follow you around?  This game asks all of those questions, and changing your mind is never a problem.

What always gets talked about in Behemoth games is the comedy.  Castle Crashers is no exception.  There is an entire level of this game based entirely on fleeing a monster who's so frightening that animals poop when they hear him coming.  That's not a lie or a typo.  You get to watch the animals poop.  One of the epic weapons that you can wield is a rubber chicken.  Yet again, not a lie.  If you're playing multiplayer, when you rescue a princess, you fight to the death to figure out who gets to smooch her.  All true.

Lastly, the game does everything it can to keep you entertained.  It's always switching up the environment, enemies, and pace of the game.  It's quick, it's addicting, and most importantly, it's fun.

  1. Is it as difficult as this game by Behemoth? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Hominid

  2. Nowhere near as difficult, but the same sort of humor. I beat Alien Hominid and I remember thinking "Man, that was fun... and I will never play that frustrating game again."
